Felix Fourdrain
Appassionato, Romance sans paroles for Piano Trio
Felix Fourdrain (1880-1923) was born in the French city of Nice. He studied organ and composition at the Ecole Niedermeyer and the Paris Conservatory with Charles-Marie Widor and Jules Massenet. He made his living as an organist and an important church in Paris and as a music teacher. He was also a successful opera composer. Most of his works were either operas, or songs.
His Appassionato, Romance sans paroles was clearly concieved as an instrumental type of aria. It is substantial work in several sections and filled with beautiful melodies which could clearly be sung. The part-writing is very nicely handled for each instrument. It will certainly make a strong if given in concert and also makes a fine choice for amateur ensembles as well.
