String Trio No.1 in G Major, Op.25--New Edition

For 2 Violins and Viola or 2 Violins and Cello

Leopold Dancla (1822-1895) was born in the French town of Bagneres de Bagorre. Like his older and more famous brother Charles, he was sent to the Paris Conservatory where he studied violin with Pierre Baillot. Although he took 1st prize in violin performance in 1842, he did not pursue a career as a soloist but worked in various Parisian orchestras and taught. He was a respected composer who mostly wrote chamber music. He had three string quartets and two string trios to his credit.

His String Trio No.1 in G Major was composed sometime during the early 1870s and published in 1877 by the prominent French publishing firm of Richault. As you can see from the title page of the Richault edition, pictured on the left, it was originally composed for 2 Violins and Viola, but with an eye toward sales, Richault, insisted that Dancla make a part for a cello as a replacement for the viola. It is in three movements and while the opening measures are quite genial, it quickly morphs into a more intense and exciting affair, which is then followed by a series of more lyrical themes. The lovely middle movement, Andante, is a kind of pastorale. The finale, Allegro moderato, is a rollicking journey in 6/8.

Our new edition is based on the original 1877 Richault edition. Dancla was a frequent chamber music player and this trio shows it. Not at all difficult to play, nonetheless it sounds very well in concert and as such can be recommended to both pros and amateurs.
