Piano Quartet in E flat Major, Op.35

Johann Baptist Cramer (1771-1858) was born in the German city of Mannheim but was brought to London by his family as a child. Except for several trips to the European continent as a touring piano virtuoso, he lived and worked most of his life in London. He studied piano and composition with Muzio Clementi and besides his career as a piano soloist, was a sought after teacher and also became a music publisher and piano manufacturer. Almost of all his compositions were for piano alone or piano and orchestra. Among his many piano students was the French composer George Onslow.

 

Cramer's Piano Quartet was originally published by the prominent British publisher Robert Birchall in 1803. By then Cramer's reputation was such that also brought a number of other music publishers including Breitkopf and Hartel.  It was dedicated to Mlle Jeanne Marie Bonne d'Alpy a French painter and patronesse of the arts. In some ways the style harks back to Johann Christian Bach. The opening movement begins with a substantial, stately Lento introduction which leads to the main section, a lively Allegro. The second movement us an elegant Rondo, moderato
