Quintet No.1 in D Major, Op.124

For Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon

Giulio Briccialdi (1919-1881) was born in Terni, Italy, in the Papal States. He began studying flute with his father. After his father's death, the 14-year-old Briccialdi moved to Rome to pursue a musical career and avoid family pressure to join the priesthood. His first appointment was to the Accdemia di Santa Cecilia in Rome at the age of 17. While in Rome he studied composition and, in 1835, began teaching flute at the ccademia di Santa Cecilia. He then moved to Naples, where he was the flute teacher for the royal family. Starting in  1841 he toured Europe and America, finally settling in London the following year. In London he became a director of the instrument making firm Rudall and Rose and was responsible for several mechanical developments which are still in use today. He was appointed professor of flute at the Conservatoire in Florence in 1870, and remained there until his death in 1881. Briccialdi is sometimes known as “the Paganini of the flute.”

Briccialdi's Wind Quintet No.1, Op.124 in D Major was composed in 1875. It  work consists of three movements: Allegro marziale - Più mosso, Andante - Meno moto, and Allegro. It is basically light and airy style, Full of upbeatand appealing melodies, it sounds rather like a work from the Classical era despite its late composition date.

We are pleased to reintroduce this charming and very appealing work for this combination. It will do well in the concert hall but presents no great technical difficulties. It makes an attractive compliment to the wind quintets by Theodor Blumer, Franz Danzi, Josef Bohuslav Theodor Blumer, Franz Danzi, Josef Bohuslav Foerster, Heinrich Schmid, August Klughardt, George Onslow, and Johann Sobeck, all for the same combination and available from Edition Silvertrust.
